Background of the Study
Managing pediatric oncology patients presents unique challenges for oncology nurses due to the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of both the child and the family. Oncology nurses must adapt their care strategies to the specific needs of children undergoing cancer treatment, addressing not only the medical aspects of care but also the emotional and developmental stages of the pediatric patient. At the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu State, oncology nurses work with pediatric cancer patients, and understanding the challenges they face is crucial for improving the quality of care. This study aims to explore these challenges and identify strategies for enhancing the care of pediatric oncology patients.
Statement of the Problem
Oncology nurses in pediatric settings face various challenges, such as communication barriers with children, managing the side effects of aggressive treatments, and supporting families through the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis. The specific challenges faced by oncology nurses in managing pediatric oncology patients at UNTH remain under-researched. This study will examine these challenges in depth and propose solutions to improve the quality of care for pediatric cancer patients.
Objectives of the Study
To identify the challenges faced by oncology nurses in managing pediatric oncology patients at UNTH, Enugu State.
To explore the strategies used by oncology nurses to overcome these challenges.
To assess the impact of these challenges on the quality of care provided to pediatric oncology patients.
Research Questions
What are the key challenges faced by oncology nurses in managing pediatric oncology patients at UNTH?
What strategies do oncology nurses employ to address these challenges?
How do these challenges impact the quality of care for pediatric oncology patients?
Research Hypotheses
Oncology nurses at UNTH face significant challenges in managing pediatric oncology patients, including communication and emotional challenges.
The strategies used by oncology nurses to manage these challenges improve the overall quality of care for pediatric patients.
The challenges faced by oncology nurses negatively impact patient care, particularly in the areas of emotional support and pain management.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on oncology nurses at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu State. Limitations may include the small sample size of nurses working with pediatric oncology patients and the subjective nature of reported challenges.
